Land, water, and air are the first concepts introduced in the classroom. They are introduced in small containers: one filled with dirt, one filled with water that is colored blue, and the other with nothing in it to represent air. (A balloon is a good way to demonstrate air.) Teachers introduce earth using a globe, and they discuss life in different parts of the world.

Photographs are essential to help children visualize and understand aspects of geography, and teachers should always be on the lookout in magazines for beautiful pictures.

Children should be encouraged to talk about and bring in items from different places they have visited. It is important for teachers to have pictures and items prior to talking about other countries to allow children to easily visualize the concepts discussed.
